January Black

Sixteen-year-old genius Matty Ducayn has never fit in on The Hill, an ordered place seriously lacking a sense of humor. After his school’s headmaster expels him for a small act of mischief, Matty’s future looks grim until King Hadrian comes to his rescue with a challenge: answer a question for a master’s diploma.

More than a second chance, this means freedom. Masters can choose where they work, a rarity among Regents, and the question is simple.

What was January Black?

It’s a ship. Everyone knows that. Hadrian rejects that answer, though, and Matty becomes compelled by curiosity and pride to solve the puzzle. When his search for an answer turns up long-buried state secrets, Matty’s journey becomes a collision course with a deadly royal decree. He's been set up to fail, which forces him to choose. Run for his life with the challenge lost...or call the king’s bluff.

Refreshingly intelligent and loads of fun!
I lost a few hours as I read this book. It's a Young Adult novel that is refreshingly and astonishingly intelligent, and the love story is perfectly played out.
~Christine Ashworth, Amazon Review

The mystery was intriguing - I loved how Wendy Russo weaved in all her secrets throughout the book, how she incorporated just enough to keep you reading, while never actually divulging much of anything. I was guessing for most of it and that's pretty hard to make me do.
~Julie, Clean Teen Reads

Wendy Russo has created a masterpiece.
~Ivan Amberlake, Author

Book Trailer

Author Wendy S. Russo

Wendy S. Russo got her start writing in the sixth grade. That story involved a talisman with crystals that had to be found and assembled before bad things happened, and dialog that read like classroom roll call. Since then, she’s majored in journalism (for one semester), published poetry, taken a course on short novels, and watched most everything ever filmed by Quentin Tarantino. A Wyoming native transplanted in Baton Rouge, Wendy works for Louisiana State University as an IT analyst. She’s a wife, a mom, a Tiger, a Who Dat, and she falls asleep on her couch at 8:30 on weeknights.

  • Aphrodite the Diva Isis claims she's the goddess of love? Ha! But to keep the title all to herself, Aphrodite has to find the perfect match for Pygmalion, the most annoying boy ever.
  • Artemis the Loyal It’s time for the annual Olympic Games, and Artemis and her friends are not happy. It’s boys only. Not fair!
  • Medusa the Mean Medusa wants to be more like her two sisters and the other kids at Mount Olympus Academy -- immortal. Is that too much to ask?
  • The Girl Games (Goddess Girls Super Special) Listen in on what all four goddess girls are thinking as Mount Olympus Academy hosts visitors from many lands--including an adorable kitten! The first-ever standalone superspecial in the Goddess Girls series!

Author Joan Holub

I graduated from college in Texas with a fine arts degree, and then freelanced as an art director at a graphic design firm for eight years. I dreamed of working in children's books, so I moved to New York City and became associate art director in Scholastic trade books, where I designed books for children and worked with editors and illustrators. It was a great job.

I illustrated my first published children's book in 1992 and soon began illustrating full time. I began completing manuscripts and mailing them out to publishers in the early 1990s. In 1996, I sold my first two manuscripts -- Boo Who? A Spooky Lift-the-Flap Book (Scholastic) and Pen Pals (Grosset & Dunlap). Yippee!

Now I write full time and have written and/or illustrated over 130 children's books. Creating books that entertain, inform, and interest children (and me) is a fabulous job that I truly love.

AMAZING! There is not enough words to describe how much I loved Hunted. Ednah Walters has outdid herself if that is even possible.

Author Ednah Walters

I grew up reading Nancy Drew and Hardy boys mysteries, hence Stratemeyer influence, before I graduated to Mills & Boons (starting with Janet Daily's Shutter the Sky) and the rest is history.

I enjoy good love stories, tingly mysteries and wondrous adventures. When I finished my college and decided to be a stay-at-home mother, I devoured books like they were going out of production, until reading just wasn't enough. So I started to write.

I've written picture books, contemporary and romantic suspense, biracial/multicultural books, and finally YA fantasy. Awakened is the first book in The Guardian Legacy series. I'm working on book 2, tentatively named Betrayed. When I'm not writing, I do things with my family, five children or my darling husband of 18 years. I live in a picturesque valley in Utah, the setting for my series.

Praise

"After reading Starseed, my faith in YA sci-fi has been restored! ... I didn't want to put it down ... it had enough mystery and suspense to keep me going, page after page. Superb job 4.5 out of 5!"
-- The Forbidden Library Book Reviews

"I would recommend this book to all sci-fi lovers and, to those who aren't into it, take a chance. Who knows? You may love this book just as much as I did! Liz Gruder is definitely an author you should keep a look out for as she has great talent in writing and a huge imagination. Starseed was a wonderful read and very different from other books I've read. It was a very nice change from what I usually read and kept me enticed all the way."
--Starlight Book Reviews

"Interesting read. A lot like Roswell, but different. Gruder does a great job building the dark mystery of what the aliens are really up to on earth."
--Charity Bradford, sci-fi author, "The Magic Wakes"

“The story caught me off guard and won me over after the first chapter. The main conflict is a personal one for Kalia. Will she embrace her alien side or continue life as a human?”
--Pixie Dust Book Reviews

Starseed is a fun sci-fi read with romance. It brings light to the cliques of high school, and challenges the main character, Kaila, to be herself, instead of how others expect her to be.
--Kerri Cuevas, YA Author "Deadly Kisses"

"Liz Gruder's characters come alive through youthful, spunky narrative, and her headstrong heroine, Kaila Guidry, elicits a reader's encouragement from the first page. Fans of P.C. Cast will find themselves similarly transported into Gruder's exploration of the dark sides of faith, love, higher dimensions, and, of course, high school."
-- Jadie Jones, YA author "Moonlit"

Since my book takes place on Earth, couldn't think of ten reasons to live in outer space. But I researched a lot about aliens, so hope this is an acceptable, fun Top Ten for you!

Top Ten Types of ALIENS

-----"TENALIENBANNER.jpg" HERE
While writing Starseed, the story of sixteen-year-old Kaila who is half-human, half-extraterrestrial, I did a lot of research on aliens. Kaila falls in love with Jordyn, who is also a hybrid, but was raised far from Earth. He, and his alien “hive” quietly invading the high school, personify alien traits from my research. Starseed features a few types of “known” aliens but with such a huge universe, there are bound to be unlimited forms of life. Here's a Top Ten Types of Aliens, with apologies if I left out your favorite ET.

1) Grays. The most commonly encountered aliens. Though there are variances on grays (from mushroom white skin, brown and even black), those with gray leathery skin are the most often seen. About 3 ½ feet tall, with large heads, black eyes, slits for noses and mouths, Grays appear in Starseed, too. They work in league with the hybrids invading a high school and why they’re here is explained.

------"alien.jpg" HERE
2) Hybrids. Both Kaila and Jordyn in Starseed are hybrids—they have alien DNA mixed with human. Most hybrids look human and you wouldn’t suspect that they’re here on Earth. That's the way they like it and what the hybrids are doing in Starseed . . . . Hybrids are extraordinarily intelligent. Kaila and Jordyn are telepathic and possess heightened mind abilities over “normal” students.

------"jordynstryker.jpg" HERE
3) Reptilians (Alpha Draconians). You don’t want to run into a Reptilian. You’re but an animal to them. Extraordinarily intelligent, telepathic, shapeshifters, reptilians can disappear into another density in a flash. They use the Grays to do their bidding. The Reptilians appear in Starseed, and provide a good scare.

--------"Reptilian.jpg." HERE
4) Nordic. Humanoid ETs that resemble Scandinavians (blonde, occasionally brunette). Some say Nordics are from the Pleiades, Vega, or Hyades. Telepathic and telekinetic, the most common encounters are tall, blonde and male.

-----"Nordic.jpg" HERE
5) Pleiadians are highly evolved, spiritual and benevolent, aiding humans to raise their consciousness. Priscilla, in Starseed, personifies this benevolent ET and seeks to help Kaila through her awakening and trials… These types of aliens exist in higher dimensions than ours.

------"priscilla.jpg" HERE
6) Arcturians. Said to be one of the most advanced civilizations in this galaxy. Arcturians preach “love and light” and telepathically message people to overcome negativity, fear and control. Love is the answer. When there's bullying in high school, as in Starseed, the haters need to get a dose of Arcturian love.

-----"arcturian.jpg" HERE
7) Sirius. Spiritual warriors, Sirians are said to have a strong connection with dolphins and whales. Sirius, a double star system in the constellation of Canis Major, was known to the Dogon tribe in Africa. Their mythology said they had contact with ETs and they knew of Sirius B (the second star) without technology.

------"Sirian.jpg" HERE
8) Andromeda. Fun loving, gentle, and giving, the Andromedans are benevolent aliens. Telepathic and empathic.  Said to have blue skin. The Hopi Indians talk about a race of blue-skinned star warriors.

-----"andromedan.jpg" HERE
9) MIB. The Men in Black, popularized by the movie, are said to be middle-aged men dressed in black suits, black hats and sunglasses. They often appear after a UFO sighting or alien encounter and intimidate people not to talk. With mechanical behavior and a monotone voice, it’s said they could be robots or androids working to protect the presence of ETs.
-------"MIB.jpg" HERE

10)  Starseeds. A Starseed is a person whose soul or consciousness has originated from another galaxy or planet. Their mission to help people to evolve and grow here on Earth. Some call them Lightworkers or Indigos. Most are empathic, strong-willed and shake their heads at most Earth institutions and customs. Highly attracted to the stars, often creative and intelligent but not in a "school" sense. Like the Science Channel’s motto, they “Question Everything.”  My book Starseed, uses the term loosely, as Kaila and Jordyn are biological hybrids. In Starseed, Kaila encounters various types of ETs, and learns her own powers. While falling in love, she's forced to understand who she is, why she’s here, and make difficult choices.

Author Liz Gruder

As a youth, Liz Gruder saw a series of UFOs with her best friend while riding bikes. Ever since, she’s held a fascination for the stars. An avid reader, she used to hide under her covers and read with a flashlight. She has degrees in English and Psychology from Tulane University, a nursing license and a yoga certification. After going through Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, Liz realized how short life is and is now slowly fulfilling her bucket list: she’s been to the Egyptian pyramids (totally awesome and thought provoking) and is now teaching yoga and writing speculative fiction. Starseed is her debut novel.

Ixeos

The McClellands are enjoying a lazy summer vacation at the beach when they are lured from our world into Ixeos, an alternate Earth. Finding themselves lost in a maze of tunnels under Paris and surrounded by strangers, they discover that they have been brought to Ixeos for one purpose:  to take the planet back from humanoid aliens who have claimed it. With the aid of the tunnels and a mysterious man named Landon, the teens travel the world seeking the key that will allow them to free Darian, the long-imprisoned rebel leader. But the aliens aren't the only problem on Ixeos -- the McClellands have to deal with brutal gangs, desperate junkies, and a world without power, where all the technology is owned by the aliens, and where most of the population has been killed or enslaved. The worst part? There's no way home.

Author Jennings Wright

Born and raised in Florida, Jennings spent her early years reading anything she could get her hands on, when she wasn't spending time in and on the water. She won a prize in the 6th grade for her science fiction stories.

Jennings attended the University of Tampa, graduating with a B.A. in Political Science, and almost enough credits for B.A.s in both English and History. She attended graduate school at the University of West Florida, studying Psychology. She spent time over the years doing various kinds of business writing, editing, and teaching writing, but mostly having and raising her family, homeschooling her children, owning and running a business with her husband, and starting a non-profit.

Thanks to a crazy idea called NaNoWriMo Jennings got back into creative writing in 2011 and hasn't stopped since. She currently lives in North Carolina with her husband, also a business owner and writer, and two children, and travels extensively with her family, and her non-profit in Uganda.

Matt Archer: Blade's Edge

When Matt Archer was fourteen, he discovered monsters are real. As if that wasn’t enough to go on for a few decades, Matt also found out that he’d been chosen to hunt those monsters--with a sentient, supernatural knife. Now fifteen, Matt has spent the last year working with a clandestine military unit, trying to rid the world of monsters, demons and other vicious creatures, all while keeping it a secret from nearly everyone he knows back home in Billings.

Including his mom.

Add in a new girlfriend, family secrets, sibling drama and enough homework to sink an aircraft carrier, and Matt’s life has become more complicated than he ever imagined. Worse, the knife has developed some very definite opinions about Matt’s personal life and it interferes in his business whenever it wants. More and more, Matt’s coming to realize that sharing brain-space with a spirit kind of sucks.

When stories of decimated towns and hordes of zombies start pouring into the Pentagon from Afghanistan, Matt knows he’ll be called up soon. Between the new mission and the knife’s increasing control over his mind, Matt wonders if he’ll survive long enough to take his driver’s exam.

Review Quotes for Matt Archer: Blade’s Edge

“Blade's Edge is an exciting continuation of the Matt Archer series. Kendra Highley did not fall victim to the sophomore funk. She has written an emotional and power story about Matt's horrific journey to rid the world of monsters.” –Kinx’s Book Nook (Amazon)

“I enjoyed Matt Archer: Monster Hunter to the point I was picking it up every time I had spare moments (which are few in my home), but MA: Blade's Edge has blown me away! Ms. Highley has crafted a story that comes to life with vivid images, exciting adventures, and thrilling mishaps that add a touch of humor (driving test, anyone?)” –Kelly C. (Amazon)

“"Matt Archer Blade's Edge" more than delivers what a reader wants from a sequel. The tension and action are taken up a level, as are the mysteries and plot developments.
Best of all, you feel the time passing from book to book and see the characters really grow and change.” –Picky Reviewer (Amazon)

“The Matt Archer books are the best young adult books I've read since I was a young adult! Think Supernatural for a younger audience, but better. I'll be ordering paper copies for my Favorites shelf. Not to be missed!” Sarah G. (Amazon)

Review quotes for Matt Archer: Monster Hunter:

“Terrific page turner; I stayed up half the night reading it, and now I can't wait for the next installment.”  --Amelia Anne (Goodreads)

“The action is quick-paced, abundant and so much fun!!! I can't get over just how awesome of a read this book is; I can't wait for more!!!” --Danielle S. (Goodreads)

“I can't remember the last time I had this much fun reading a book. The eponymous narrator is a very likable and believable hero, the world is rich and detailed….
It has been a long time since I was a teenager, but I'm pretty sure that this book would appeal to an audience of all ages.” -- Misha B. (Goodreads)

“The action doesn't stop. Seriously! I was up until after 1am because I couldn't put it down!” --Riamachia (Amazon)

“It's funny - I thought I was too old for YA stories, and then I realised that I was just looking for the right kind of stories to hold my interest. This is one of those. If you're looking for vampires or angels or similar things that tend to make up YA novels at the moment, you won't find that here - you will, however, find something a bit more awesome.” –Sweartoad (Amazon)

Praise

"You know from the opening paragraph that something very strange is going on… We see Kaila try to live the life of a normal teen, and we see her "otherness" pull her back into an increasingly tangled web of questions, deceit, and hidden intentions. Liz really shines as a writer, lining the closets and drawers of everyday life with spine-chilling suspense that springs out at you when you least expect it. Starseed is an entertaining read. I highly recommend."

But even as the crew prepares to leave port, Sadie has suspicions about the voyage ahead and the relationship between her normally easygoing son and a mysterious female passenger he obviously knows but refuses to discuss. When the woman is discovered unconscious during the second night at sea, Sadies apprehension escalates. Over the last few years, Sadie has developed an extreme dislike for secrets and it would seem her son is keeping one from her. *Includes eight new mouthwatering recipes, tested and approved by the official bakers of Sadies Virtual Test Kitchen.

Praise for Baked Alaska
Josi Kilpack has done it again. You would think that all these events that occur in Sadie's life wouldn't be natural, but Josi Kilpack has a way of making you believe that it just "happens" and it is normal. I have grown to love Sadie's character, even if she is a busybody, you can't help but cheer for her as she attempts to solve a mystery or crime. One of my favorite series. :)

Josi's Top Ten Favorite Books:
*Disclaimer: Though this is a top ten list, it is not necessarily ranked. Consider each of these books as one of my top favorites, not necessarily my #1 or # 8 pick :-)

1-So Brave, Young, and Handsome by Leif Enger. I absolutely love Leif Enger's writing and even though this plot might be considered slow to some, I loved everything about this book. I especially loved the opening paragraph--I laughed out loud at his characters near-embarrassment about not being tragic enough of a writer. Great book.

2-The Strength To Endure by Tristi Pinkston. This book had limited availablity and can be very hard to find, but it is a fascinating story that follows the journey of a baby born in a concentration camp in Nazi Germany. It's one I worry about loaning out for fear I won't get it back and will find difficult to replace.

3-The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot. This book tells the story of a woman who's cancer cells changed the world. It is hard core science, but written in a way that was easy to follow. The author used a surprisingly neutral voice which I felt helped me to make up my own mind in regard to the ethics involved.

4-In the Company of Angels by David Farland. This fictional representation is based on accounts of the Willey Martin Handcart company. It sugar coats nothing and I appreciated the truth behind these stories. Though it showed the fallibility of many people involved on the ill fated pioneer migration, I found it very faith affirming.

5-Oh The Places You'll Go by Dr. Suess. I was introduced to this book through a freind, Julie Wright, who has an almost spiritual connection to the story. I picked it up--though I'm not sure how I missed it before her reccomendation--and fell in love. When my daughter graduated from high-school I had family members fill the front and back cover with advise. Now that she's gone to school, I can't read it without crying.

6-These is my words by Nancy E. Turner. This book is written in journal format and was incredible in many ways. You see Sarah grow through her entries and yet it reads so smoothly and is so captivating. I was convinced it was non-fiction until I did some research. Excellently executed book.

7-Book of a Thousand Days by Shannon Hale. This is another book written in journal form. It has a medieval setting, and some fantastical elements, and I devoured it in one sitting. Very fresh and entertaining story.

8-My Not So Fairy Tale Life by Julie Wright. I love that this book shows a fresh perspective both on LDS culture and adoption. I found the main character so real and I think of this story any time I learn of an unplanned pregnancy, or the decision someone makes to adopt or put their baby up for adoption. I have two copies of this book, one I loan out, and the other I keep in my cedar chest.

9-The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls. This is a non-fiction book about the authors childhood and how her parents mental illnesses and addictions influenced her life. I've read other similar accounts, but I was impressed with the voice this author chose to use. She is not angry, and she is not cruel in her accounts. Rather she is sympathetic yet honest about what took place. I enjoyed that perspective and found that it helped me be more fair in my own assessments.

10-Bound on Earth by Angela Hallstrom. This book is made up of vignettes that cover a great deal of time and focus on women within 3 generations of one family. It's revolves around the LDS church quite

Author Josi S. Kilpack

Josi S. Kilpack grew up hating to read until she was thirteen and her mother handed her a copy of The Witch of Blackbird Pond. She began her first novel in 1998 and hasn’t stopped since. Praise

"Well written and very fast paced. You won’t get bored or find your mind wandering. I’d love to see a sequel to this collection and see what happens next. I give this book five out of five donuts."

"This book starts off dipping its toe right into the heart of the story, not unlike Ms. White's YA novel Elemental, and the story never really slows down to a lazy pace; making it a very easy and fast read."

"Ms. White wonderfully succeeded in instilling humor into ten short stories about vampires, zombies, ghosts, and one mad scientist. Each story is brilliantly linked. The Victorian era setting delightfully adds to the humor."

"This is a wonderful mix of Steampunk and Horror written in Emily White's unmistakable brilliance and style. Does it get any better than that?"

About Author Emily White

Emily White lives in NY, wedged between two of the Great Lakes and a few feet of snow and ice. She's spent most of her life running away from the cold, and even spent a year in Iraq, but now contents herself with writing her characters into warm, exotic places in faraway galaxies. When not tapping away at her computer keys, she can be found reading, reading, and reading some more. And when she's not doing that, she's usually playing video games with her husband, peek-a-boo with her kids, or walking through her garden, wondering why the bugs insist on eating all her vegetables.
